Special Educational Needs

Regular assessment of all pupils’ achievements and needs enables early identification of children with Special Educational Needs. The school employs a specialist teacher who, together with class teachers, sets termly targets and plans individual educational programmes for pupils with identified needs. She supports teachers in the implementation of these plans, by providing appropriate ideas and suitable resources as well as sharing in the teaching of the children. If it is felt necessary, children may be referred to a range of educational specialists. Parents are kept informed at each stage of this process and are involved in supporting the child at home.

Gifted and Talented Pupils

The needs of more able pupils are met by a number of different methods. Teachers aim to challenge more able children in every lesson by providing extension activities. We group children by ability for Maths in Years 4 to 6 and English in Years 5 and 6. The Gifted and Talented Co-ordinator oversees the identification of more able pupils, sets targets and supports teachers in the implementation of plans to ensure more able children’s needs are met.
